What is Night Watch?

Night Watch is a committee of volunteers coordinated by a chairperson under the direction of the Denver Central Committee and the Central Office. Night Watch volunteers coordinate 12 Step calls and/or provide general information to people who phone the “A.A. Hotline”. This service covers the hours that the Central Office is closed, weekdays from 5:00pm until 9:00am and from Friday at 5:00pm until 9:00am on Monday when the Office reopens. A contracted Answering Service intercepts phone calls placed to Alcoholics Anonymous and relays the information to a night watch volunteer at home. The volunteer receives the information, then calls the person,  evaluates the situation and takes appropriate action.

When you volunteer as a night watch person you take on the responsibility of responding to calls directed to Alcoholics Anonymous during the hours the Central Office is closed. For this responsibility it is suggested you have one year of continuous sobriety. Depending on the issue, the night watch person can give the caller a meeting time and location, refer the call to a person on the 12 Step list (of the same gender) or give the caller a phone number from your List of useful resources. If you are unsure what to do, call the night watch coordinator, or another experienced night watcher for assistance. Your primary task is to be there and to respond to anyone who reaches out for the hand of AA. You may be the first and only contact this caller has with A.A. Do your best and let God do the rest.
